The chakras are described[by whom?] as being aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head. New Agepractices often associate each chakra with a certain colour. In various traditions chakras are associated with multiple physiological functions, an aspect of consciousness, a classical element, and other distinguishing characteristics. They are visualized as lotuses/flowers with a different number of petals in every chakra.
The chakras are thought to vitalise the physical body and to be associated with interactions of a physical, emotional and mental nature. They are considered loci of life energy or prana, also called shakti, qi (Chinese; ki in Japanese), koach-ha-guf (Hebrew), bios (Greek) & aether (Greek, English), which is thought to flow among them along pathways called nadis. The function of the chakras is to spin and draw in this energy to keep the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health of the body in balance. They are said by some to reflect how the unified consciousness of humanity (the immortal human being or the soul), is divided to manage different aspects of earthly life (body/instinct/vital energy/deeper emotions/communication/having an overview of life/contact to God). The chakras are placed at differing levels of spiritual subtlety, withSahasrara at the top being concerned with pure consciousness, and Muladhara at the bottom being concerned with matter, which is seen simply as condensed, or gross consciousness.
Everybody should know how each Chakra affects you if it is open and functioning, or closed and malfunctioning. It is very important for your well being on a spiritual, emotional, mental and physical level. To begin, I’d like to start with the Base Chakra.
This chakra is associated with the color RED (a LOTUS FLOWER), the sense of SMELL, the element EARTH, and in the endocrine system, THE TESTES AND OVARIES. This Chakra draws down spiritual energy and grounds us in the physical world. It is related to the physical processes of reproduction, excretion and to the various guilt and fear complexes associated with them. This chakra is located at the base of the spine, by the tip of the tailbone and opening downward. It is psychologically related to your security, sensuality, and survival. It is also related to your legs, ankles, knees, bones, feet, nose, large intestine, and anus. If it is malfunctioning, or closed, you would experience things such as obsesity, anorexia, sciatica, constipation, and sometimes problems with sexual organs. The emotion you would most likely feel is fear, lust, obsession, or problems with sexuality. The main function of this chakra is to ground or root us. When we are grounded, we are at one with life.
Our base chakra, or Muladhara, is the foundation of life. Confidence in who we are or whom we trust, are functions of this chakra. If in our early life we felt safe and protected, then trust in the world was well established. If our conception was traumatic, the enviroment of our mothers womb or our childhood (ages 1-7) was disruptive, then stesses in the base chakra make us see the world, and other people, as frightening.
